Laos Highlighted Holiday Summary:
Unearth amazing Laos on this 10-day adventure through a landlocked country where rich cultural traditions are combined with stunning natural environs. Beginning in Vientiane, Asia's biggest village, discover why the Laotian capital draws parallels with Paris when you visit Patuxay monument, Laos' version of the Arc de Triumphe. Enjoy a cup of famous Laos coffee, grown in the Boloven Pleateu both the scent and flavour are distinctively aromatic. Your time in Vientiane ends with a guided tour of the city on which you will visit the capitals main and most revered sites before departing for Luang Prabang.
The second part of this Laos tour will see you descend upon the country's spiritual capital, Luang Prabang. A unique blend of temples and colonial buildings set between two rivers and a range of limestone mountains, it is one of the last Shangri-la's in the world. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, we will bring you deep into the limestone caverns of the Pak Ou Caves to see the repository of Buddha statues and up Mount Phou Si to capture the spectacular panorama of the town. Bath in the warm waters of the Kuang Si Waterfalls. Visit the Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre, a museum dedicated to exploring the rich diversity of Laos' ethnic minorities that will serve you well on the next part of this Laos tour.
Traversing deeper into the pristine wilderness of northern Laos, the second leg of this Laos package tour takes you to Kamu Lodge, nestled in the heart of a lush jungle by the riverbank. An overnight stay at the lodge offers a charming interlude to cultural touring. You will have time to experience the local lifestyles from the wide array of activities available, ranging from rice planting in the paddy fields to forest hiking in search of indigenous herbs.

Lunch: Lunches are normally arranged at the Cambodian restaurants near the scenic spots. Your tour guides will order food according to your appetite. Most are Cambodian dishes, and some are modified to fit westerners' tastes.
Dinner: Same as lunch. If you prefer to not eat Cambodian food, Cruises Mekong River suggests you have dinner on your own. Your local tour guide can recommend some good western restaurants in the area.

Laos Highlighted Holiday Full Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive Vientiane (B/)
Upon arrival in Vientiane you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of your day is at leisure.
Vientiane, capital of Laos, is Asia's biggest village. Busy and hectic in comparison to the rest of the country, it is quiet compared with any other city in Asia. Vientiane, as all of Lao's major cities, is situated on the Mekong River which forms the lifeline of the country. The city has a population of less a million and is a true blend of east and west. French Colonial architecture sits side-by-side with gilded temples and you will find fresh baked French bread being served next to shops selling noodle soup.
In the evenings, the food stalls that line the river bank serve some unusual local delicacies and for the less adventurous the city is also home to some of the country's finest restaurants.

Day 2: Vientiane, City Tour, Baci Ceremony (B/)
This morning there is an optional early start to visit the fascinating local market of Thongkhankham, where a bewildering array of foods and produce ar on offer.
The remainder of the morning is dedicated to seeing the capital. First up is a visit to Wat Sisaket, the only temple to be left intact after the Siamese invasion in 1828. It’s arguably the most beautiful temple in Vientiane and houses thousands of miniature Buddha statues within its walls.
Your next stop is Wat Phra Keo, which now operates as a religious museum, with many Lao and Khmer works of art on display, moving on to the Patuxai monument - also called Anousavari. Here, you can climb up on the roof for fantastic panoramic views. Also on the list for the morning is a stop at That Luang, the holiest place in Laos, and Wat Simuang, the most popular and venerated temple in Vientiane. You can also visit Talat Sao, the morning market, for a bit of souvenir buying (silk and silver jewellery are good bets) and an insight into daily life for the people of Vientiane.
Complete your morning with a visit to the excellent COPE exhibition centre, highlighting the Lao people's continued day-to-day struggle with the unexploded ordnance as a result of heavy bombing campaigns during the Vietnam War era.
In the afternoon visit the quirky Buddha Park, an enchanting collection of Buddhist and Hindu sculptures situated on a Mekong Riverside meadow outside of the city centre. The statues were created by a mysterious monk by way of spreading his philosophy on life and revealing his ideas about the universe. Upon return to the city centre, make a brief stop at the Lao Disabled Womens Centre, which provides valuable training and schooling for disabled women in Laos.
In the late afternoon attend a Baci ceremony. Its purpose is to call escaped spirits back to the body, a tradition that is very important for Lao people before major events such as weddings, births, travel or when welcoming friends.

Day 3: Vientiane, Pakse, Bolaven Plateau, Tad Lo Waterfalls (B/)
Morning transfer to the airport for your flight to Pakse. On arrival you will me met by your guide for the journey east across the Bolaven Plateau, passing the many plantations typical of those found in the region. Any visit to the plateau provides a refreshing break from the heat and allows you to observe the cultivation of rich coffee, tea, cardamom, bananas, and other crops that can be visited en route.
The area is also famous for its many waterfalls with the most beautiful of these being Tad Fan which you will visit. During high waters, the waterfall is spectacular with twin waterfalls plummeting into the deep gorge surrounded by flourishing vegetation below.
In the continue to Tad Lo, home to another scenic waterfall as well as numerous ethnic minority groups. Having visited the villages of Alak, Nge, and Katu return to your lodge where you can enjoy a sunset swim in the waterfalls.

Day 4: Tad Lo, Elephant Ride, Champasak, Wat Phou, 4000 Islands (Si Phan Don) (B/)
Early risers may well be rewarded by the arrival of elephants eager for a morning bath in the waterfalls! For those who wish to get a little closer, a ride through the nearby forest is also an option before making the journey south to Si Phan Don, or the ‘4000 Islands’. Although some of the islands are technically just sand banks, there are still hundreds of scenic spots to enjoy.
Your first destination is Champasak, crossing the Mekong River by ferry and visiting the fascinating pre-Angkorian ruins of Wat Phou that are located near to the town and are one of South-East Asia's most dramatically situated temple sites with superb views across the Mekong River. Designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2001, the site dates back to the 5th century, predating the famous Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Whilst much of the origins of Wat Phou are unclear, it is believed that the original temple was built by the Khmer Hindus who eventually made Angkor Wat their capital.
Return to Champasak to admire the town's wonderful French colonial architecture before crossing the water once again and making your way to either Done Daeng or Done Khong. The remainder of your day is at leisure to explore the island by foot or bike, or just simply relax into the Si Phan Don pace of life!

Day 5: 4000 Islands, Khone Papheng Waterfall (B/)
After breakfast, take a local boat to the peaceful islands of Done Det and Done Khone, sites of the only railway ever built in Laos (end of the 19th century).
After a stroll through the palm-fringed villages, continue to the southernmost part of Laos and the impressive Khone Papheng waterfalls, just a few miles from the Cambodian border.
In the afternoon, return to your hotel via a good location to spot the region’s rare Irrawaddy dolphins. The remainder of your day is at leisure to relax or explore the island further.

Day 6: 4000 Islands, Pakse, Luang Prabang (B/)
Your day is at leisure until your transfer to Pakse for your flight to Luang Prabang.
Upon arrival you will be met by your guide for the transfer to your hotel. The remainder of your day is at leisure.
Luang Prabang, the ‘Jewel of Indochina’, is a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site and regularly voted as one of Asia's premier travel destinations. The ancient royal city is surrounded by mountains and is situated at a junction of the Mekong and Khan Rivers.
In the centre of the city is Mount Phousi, rewarding climbers of its 328 steps with stunning views of the surrounding temples and hills. Luang Prabang, a city where time has seemingly stood still, is also an outstanding example of the fusion of traditional Lao architecture with structures built by the European colonial authorities in more recent times. Its unique, remarkably well-preserved townscape illustrates a key stage in the blending of these two distinct cultural traditions.
In the evening there are plenty of great restaurants to choose from - we also recommend the local river side stalls for some truly authentic Lao flavours, washed down with the excellent Beer Lao!

Day 7: Luang Prabang, Walking Tour (B/)
An option (although we highly recommend it; in fact, we almost insist) for early-risers is dawn visit to witness the long lines of orange-robed monks leaving their pagodas to receive offerings of food from the residents of Luang Prabang. It’s a fantastic experience and for many a highlight of their visit to this iconic city.
After breakfast, enjoy a tour of the city. Your circuit begins at the former Royal Palace, now the National Museum, continuing on to Wat Mai, a temple renowned for its golden bas-reliefs. During Pimai (the Lao New Year celebrations in April), the Kingdoms Palladium - known as Prabang and normally housed in the Royal Palace Museum - is put on public display in this temple. Continue on to Wat Xieng Thong, perhaps the most photographed temple in Luang Prabang (quite an accolade!).
In the late morning visit Wat Mai and the unique Wat Visoun, entirely rebuilt after its destruction in 1887 by the invading Black Flags from southern China. In the courtyard of Wat Visoun stands the Watermelon Stupa, which is shaped like the fruit it takes its name from.
In the afternoon start with the excellent Arts and Ethnology Centre which will give you further insight into the ethnic mix and culture of Laos. There is also time to visit the weaving and textile villages of Ban Xangkhong and Ban Xienglek before returning to the Old Town to climb Mount Phousi and enjoy the stunning views across Luang Prabang as the sun sets.

Day 8: Luang Prabang, Mekong River Cruise, Pak Ou, Kamu Eco Lodge (B/L/D)
An early departure by boat takes you up the Mekong River to the Pak Ou caves, which house literally thousands of Buddha statues, hidden from the looting Chinese Haw in times gone by. The statues range from a few centimetres to the size of a human.
After a tour of the caves, continue to Kamu Eco Lodge on the banks of the river, arriving in time for lunch. The lodge features 20 canvas tents covered by a thatched roof, each styled in harmony with its surrounds and adapted to the local Lao style. Each tent has an attached private bathroom with shower, toilet, solar-powered warm water and electricity.
In the afternoon you can enjoy this unique setting in a variety of ways. Options include rice planting, gold-panning, jungle walks to search for medicinal plants, traditional fishing, a local village visit, an archery contest, or simply relaxing and soaking up the atmosphere. Supper is served at the camp.
Overnight at the Kamu Lodge.
Day 9: Kamu Eco Lodge, Luang Prabang (B/)
Enjoy a peaceful breakfast and a further opportunity to walk nearby or even take a dip in the river before taking the short cruise back to Luang Prabang.
